Process production orders with family profile

You can perform shop floor activities for production orders that use the Family source type or items with a family profile on the Shop Floor Production page in Business Central, the same way you process other production items.

To process production orders with a family, see Create production document with family.

When you process a production order that uses the Family source type, the system treats related items as a group. This simplifies production management and standardizes how information appears across the application.

  • On the Production Orders list page, the system displays one line for the entire family-based production order. All outputs are processed in the same order.

  • On the PO Details page,

    • Certain field values, such as Variant and Order Line No., are not applicable to family orders and are displayed as “”.
    • Packaging information is displayed for all items within the family.
  • Work instructions apply to all items in the family and cover all variants.

  • Input items appear as one line only if they’re defined as components on the family record. If the same input item, such as Milk, is listed separately for each output item and not on the family record, it appears multiple times, once for each output. To streamline the input view and avoid duplicates, add it as a component on the Family page.

  • Components of a specific item in the family are also listed.

  • The name of the finished good appears in the component description.

Avoid the following actions when working with family-based production orders. These actions aren't supported and result in errors in the shop floor.

  • Adding unplanned outputs, co-products, or manual production order lines.

  • Registering time for capacity on the Shop Floor Production page. The shop floor production time entries are not recorded for family orders completed through shop floor production.
