Unit of measure groups

You can create and manage groups of units of measure by assigning a code and grouping them according to your requirements on the Unit of Measure Groups page. This configuration helps you to represent logical groupings of related units. These groups enable you to define a baseline unit (for example, kilogram for weight) and establish conversion ratios for other units within the same group. While weight and length are the most configured groups, the flexibility of this feature allows you to set up additional groups for any units where predefined conversion ratios can improve efficiency.

To configure a unit of measure group, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Search icon , enter Unit of Measure Groups, and then choose the related link.
The Unit of Measure Groups page opens.

You can also access this page from the Standard Measurements Setup page. For more information, see Set up standard measurements.

  2. On the action bar, select New.

  3. Enter the required information in the following fields:

    FieldDescription
CodeEnter a unique code for the unit of measure group.
DescriptionEnter the name that describes the unit of measure group.
Baseline Unit of MeasureSelect the unit of measure that is used as the base for the unit of measure group.
You cannot delete the unit of measure record selected in this field.
Method of Expressing Relation to Base UOMSelect the required option to define how the system calculates the ratio between the item unit of measure and the baseline unit of measure within the same unit of measure group.
This applies when a new unit of measure is added to the Item Units of Measure page that already includes a baseline unit of measure and is assigned the same unit of measure group (such as WEIGHT). The selected option determines how the relationship between the two units is expressed and how related quantity fields are automatically calculated.
    The options are:
    • Always Qty. per Base UOM: The system uses the Qty. per Baseline UOM field values from the Unit of Measure page, to calculate the ratio between the two units of measure. This ratio determines the correct value in the Quantity Expressed in the UOM field on the Item Units of Measure page. This is the default option.
For existing records, the system automatically sets the value of the Method of Expressing Relation to Base UOM field to this option.
    • Always Base Qty. per UOM: The system uses the Baseline UOM Quantity field values from the Unit of Measure page, to calculate the ratio between the two units of measure. This ratio determines the correct value in the Quantity Expressed in Base UOM field on the Item Units of Measure page.
    • Larger Uses Base Qty. Per UOM: The system first applies the Always Qty. per Base UOM option. If the resulting ratio is less than 1, it switches to using the Always Base Qty. per UOM option instead, to avoid small decimal values.
When you change the value in this field, the new configuration applies only to item unit of measure records added afterward. Existing records remain unchanged.

For more information, see Automatic update of item UoM quantities.
